The storyline follows the tale of two Mormon proselytizers as they work to promote their faith with the residents of a modest Ugandan settlement. Developed by the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, as well as the record-breaking EGOT recipient, Robert Lopez, the musical score is renowned for receiving its very own Tony Award.
In reaction to pleas from actors to review the portrayal of black characters in light of issues about racial equality, a couple of lyrics and points of the storyline were marginally modified back in 2021. Nevertheless, the concepts of friendship, faith, and hope, which go beyond all religious beliefs, remain consistent across the play.
In their evaluation, The New York Daily News portrays how The Book of Mormon is a production where you frequently catch yourself laughing one moment and afterwards uncover your mouth agape the next, ultimately tearing up and, finally, rooting for the main singers. Writers Stone and Parker are well-known for their "take-no-prisoners, nothing-is-sacred method to humor."
Moreover, Lopez shows a knack for thumbing his nose at modern standards. As all three share credit for the book, music, and words, this show can be characterized as "foolish, heartfelt, and exceptionally crude, while the score continually bright and intelligent keeps the scenes in this Book moving effortlessly.”
The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is regarded as one of the top venues for in-demand Broadway productions in all of New York! Drop by the performance area at New York for the ultimate watching encounter of The Book of Mormon.
